Shared Resources Water Treatment Plant

Project Overview

In 2021, both the Minnehaha Community Water Corporation (MCWC) and the Big Sioux Community Water System (BSCWS) experienced their highest water demand because of droughts and population increases. Due to limited capacity, neither system could make the necessary improvements to meet the projected demand. This infrastructure project essentially combines the two systems to provide water to communities in South Dakota’s Minnehaha, Lake, and Moody counties.

The project includes the construction of a new 8.0MGD water treatment plant. The new Shared Resources Water Treatment Facility includes extensive earthwork and site utilities, along with cast-in-place concrete footings, slabs, and walls. Building construction features pre-cast concrete panels, pre-cast double tee roof panels, and pre-cast hollow core plank. Major process equipment includes aeration systems, lime-softening solids contact units, media filtration, high service vertical turbine pumps, backwash vertical turbine pumps, and chemical feed systems.

Constructed in 30 months, the scope also encompasses building mechanical, HVAC, and plumbing systems; electrical infrastructure including standby generators, MCCs, VFDs, switchgear, conduit, and wire; and instrumentation and controls hardware with conduit and wire supporting the plant’s SCADA system.

The new facility – 70% capacity for MCWC and 30% for BSCWS – is projected to meet demand for the next 30 years.
